Do you know who Piwok Park is named after? It’s named after Staff Sergeant Stephan J. Piwok. He was killed in action in France during World War II. In December 1944, Stephan was attacking a German position. He served with the 17th Armored Infantry Battalion. Stephan was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his bravery.
The citation reads “For gallantry in action”. After taking Bining Barracks, his platoon faced intense artillery fire. Staff Sergeant Piwok left his safe position. He returned to the dangerous barracks area. He supervised the movement of each man to safety. While checking positions, a shellburst killed him. His courage saved many lives.
The three Piwok brothers lived nearby. They lived on South Beatrice Street. Joe and Walter Piwok served in the Navy. They were in the Pacific Theatre. Stephan served in the Army in Europe.
The City of Detroit Parks and Recreation Division is always working to improve Piwok Park. They seek community input to make the park even better. Residents help decide what amenities would best serve them. This collaborative approach ensures the park meets the community’s needs.
