Deep in the heart of Cascais, Portugal, lies Quinta do Pisão, a place steeped in history and brimming with natural beauty. Quinta do Pisão was once a “Farm Colony” for mental and tuberculosis patients. Established in 1949, the colony’s 300 patients worked the fields as part of their therapy. The colony was entirely self-sustained, a testament to their hard work and dedication. This continued until 1990 when legal issues surrounding self-production brought farming activities to a halt. The entire 355 hectares of Quinta do Pisão were abandoned.

By 2008, Quinta do Pisão had become a site of illegal activities. Hunting, littering, and rave parties were common. The buildings within the farm were vandalized and neglected. It was considered an unsafe area, and its natural treasures were at risk. But the story of Quinta do Pisão doesn’t end here. A vision emerged to transform this neglected space into a nature park. This involved gaining political support and collaborating with key stakeholders. The Social Security Institute, which owned part of the property, and the Natural Park joined forces. Together, they sought to create a shared vision for Quinta do Pisão’s future.

The first step was regaining physical control of the farm. This meant stopping the illegal activities and demonstrating that change was coming. An ecological survey was conducted to assess the natural resources and develop a preliminary park plan. A master plan was then created and approved. This plan envisioned an open park, free of charge, where the landscape would be managed for its ecological value. Farming would be used as a tool to restore and maintain the priority habitat, alongside other conservation efforts. Quinta do Pisão began to reopen to the public gradually. The buildings were restored, and the community was encouraged to embrace the park and recognize its significance.

Gates and fences were installed to control access, along with signs explaining the “Nature Conservation Actions” taking place. The fields were plowed, and meadows were established. Sheep, donkeys, and horses were brought in to maintain the land. This seemingly simple act had a profound impact on the community. The restoration of the oak forest began, removing eucalyptus plantations and invasive acacia areas with the help of a volunteer program. This initiative further engaged the community in the revitalization of Quinta do Pisão. Educational panels were installed in 2011, officially opening the park to the public. Today, Quinta do Pisão thrives with over 3,500 visitors each month. Regular nature activities are organized, and an annual volunteer program continues to flourish. Quinta do Pisão is now a certified organic producer of vegetables, boasting a one-hectare vegetable garden and a one-hectare lavender field. Visitors can even “pick their own crops,” fostering a direct connection with the producers and promoting local, seasonal food. The park is home to 100 sheep and 19 donkeys, both endangered national breeding species. Partnerships with five beekeepers ensure honey production within the park, incorporating a social element into the park’s activities. Quinta do Pisão’s transformation from an abandoned farm to a vibrant nature park is a testament to the power of vision, collaboration, and community engagement.
