Did you know Piranha Bytes once called this building on Ruhrallee in Essen home? This German video game developer was best known for its role-playing games like the Gothic and Risen series. For many years, Piranha Bytes shaped the gaming landscape from right here.

Piranha Bytes’ story began in 1997 in Bochum. Four founders Alex Brüggemann, Mike Hoge, Stefan Nyul and Tom Putzki had a vision. They wanted to create immersive RPG experiences. In 1999, the company became a subsidiary of Phenomedia.

The early 2000s were turbulent. Phenomedia faced financial scandal. In 2002, Piranha Bytes’ management bought out the studio. They secured the rights to the Gothic series. The studio moved from Bochum to Essen in 2003. This location became their creative hub.

The development of Gothic 3 was challenging. Its release was rushed. This led to criticism from gamers and magazines. Piranha Bytes parted ways with publisher JoWood. They restructured to prevent future delays.

In 2007, Piranha Bytes found a new publisher, Koch Media AG. They created the Risen franchise together. Risen showed the world that Piranha Bytes could deliver solid titles on schedule.

Over the years, Piranha Bytes saw many changes. Mike Hoge, one of the original founders, left in 2012. But the company continued to evolve. They announced ELEX in 2015, a post-apocalyptic science-fantasy RPG. For this, they partnered with THQ Nordic.

In May 2019, THQ Nordic acquired Piranha Bytes. At the time, the studio had 31 employees. The company was reincorporated as Piranha Bytes GmbH.

However, the story took a sad turn. In 2023, Embracer Group sought a buyer for Piranha Bytes. The search was unsuccessful. Layoffs began in December. By June 2024, the studio closed.

Despite the closure, Piranha Bytes’ legacy lives on. Former employees formed Pithead Studio. They continue the spirit of game development.

Standing here, you can almost feel the energy. Imagine the developers working on their games. Envision the creative process that brought Gothic and ELEX to life. Piranha Bytes may be gone. Its impact on the gaming world remains. Their games entertained and inspired countless players around the globe. This building was the heart of that creativity.
