How did an island nicknamed “Spotted” become the lonely heart of the Galápagos? The island, once teeming with life, is perhaps best known as the home of Lonesome George. Lonesome George, the last known Pinta Island tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra abingdonii), became a global symbol of extinction. He roamed Pinta alone, a living testament to the devastating impact of introduced feral goats. These goats, brought to the island in 1959, decimated the vegetation, robbing the tortoises of their food source. Imagine Pinta before the goats, a vibrant ecosystem with a thriving tortoise population. These gentle giants shaped the landscape, grazing on the lush vegetation. But the goats changed everything, pushing the Pinta tortoise to the brink. While Lonesome George lived out his days at the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island, conservationists fought to reclaim Pinta. By 1990, the goats were eradicated.
