“Panda paradise” whispers on the wind. This is Pingwu County. It is more than just a place on a map. It’s a tapestry woven with history, nature, and unique cultures.
Pingwu County sits in northern Sichuan province. It borders Gansu province. Pingwu is the northernmost county-level division of Mianyang. Imagine standing here surrounded by mountains. They stretch as far as the eye can see. 94% of Pingwu is above 1000 meters elevation.
The story of Pingwu stretches back over 1700 years. In 108 CE, the Eastern Han established Guanghan County. It was ruled from present-day Wen County. In 280 Pingwu County was first established. The name Pingwu comes from Yinping and Guangwu counties.
Pingwu’s story is intertwined with various kingdoms and dynasties. By the 6th century, the Di kingdoms waned. Much of the area was integrated into the Yarlung dynasty. Yet Pingwu retained a unique linguistic identity. It was akin to that of the Di tribe.
Pingwu is a land of towering peaks and rushing rivers. It lies along the upper reaches of the Fujiang River. The average yearly temperature is 14.7 degrees Celsius. The climate shapes the lives of the people and the wildlife here.
Today, Pingwu is known for its production of Shiitake and wood ear mushrooms. In 2009, the output was 1.1 million kg. These mushrooms thrive in Pingwu’s climate.

But Pingwu offers more than just pandas. Two species of Megophryidae frogs are only found here. They are Scutiger pingwuensis and Oreolalax chuanbeiensis.
