What secrets does a quiet, leafy circle hold within a bustling park? Here at the Pinguinbrunnen, a hidden gem nestled within Hamburg’s Stadtpark, you’ll find an oasis of tranquility. The Pinguinbrunnen isn’t just a fountain; it’s a gateway. It marks the entrance to a secluded world of themed gardens in the eastern part of the park. Four steps lead down into this sunken garden. The interplay of light and shadow from the beech trees creates a captivating scene, especially on sunny days. The Pinguinbrunnen’s centerpiece is a small, octagonal basin perched atop a larger one. Six bronze penguin figures by August Gaul surround a gently murmuring fountain. These penguins have become beloved symbols of the Stadtpark. Sadly, they’ve also been targets of vandalism and theft. Replicas now stand in place of the originals, which are safely stored away during the harsh Hamburg winters. The penguins even get a “roof over their heads” to protect them from the elements. The artistic enrichment of Stadtpark was championed by Alfred Lichtwark. He was the director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. Lichtwark envisioned bringing art out of museums and into the open air, creating a sort of open-air museum for the people. The Pinguinbrunnen is just one of 22 sculptures that now grace the Stadtpark, a testament to his vision. This charming spot offers a peaceful escape from the lively atmosphere of the park’s main areas. It’s a place to pause, reflect, and appreciate the whimsical charm of the Pinguinbrunnen.
