“What if a park could be more than just grass and trees?” That’s the question that comes to mind as we stand here at Pingree Park in Detroit. This 18-acre space is more than just a park. It represents a community’s revival.

In 2017, Pingree Park underwent a significant transformation. Project EverGreen collaborated with local businesses, community groups, and the City of Detroit. Together, about 200 volunteers pruned and planted trees. They filled in ruts in the grass playing area. They even painted backstops and removed weeds from the playground.

Minnie Knox, a 50-year resident, said this boost helped return Pingree Park to its former glory. She remembers her kids and grandkids growing up here. She expressed how happy she was.

But the project’s impact goes beyond aesthetics. It is about boosting the health and well-being of the neighborhood. It aimed to raise home values. The renovation sought to provide increased safety for kids playing sports. It aimed to establish a community hub for residents to connect.

Cindy Code, executive director of Project EverGreen, noted the improved space generates enough oxygen for nearly 15,000 people per day. She said the park functions as the lungs of the surrounding neighborhood.

Magna International played a key role. The company donated $100,000 to get the project started. Employees volunteered their time and effort. Jim Tobin, Magna’s Chief Marketing Officer, emphasized the importance of giving back. He highlighted their support for healthy habits and outside play for children.

Pingree Park offers a range of amenities. You can find a picnic barbecue station for gatherings. Basketball courts invite friendly competition. A playground offers space for children. Baseball, soccer, and football fields provide space for sports.

Planet Detroit reported that the mature trees provide shade. They allow kids to play and adults to supervise without getting too warm. Flyers around the park showcase upcoming events for youth and teens. I saw one announcing a 3 on 3 basketball tournament. There were also classes for Jr. cheerleading.

Improvements provide residents with better use of the park. They increase safety for kids playing on the grass sports fields. They generate community pride. The park creates a central community hub for people to gather.

The community is tied into Pingree Park. Neighbors asked the Detroit Police Department to monitor reckless driving in the neighborhood.

Pingree Park is more than just a green space. It is a symbol of community. It is a place for connection and growth.
