Picture this. You are standing in the heart of Pimpama. A once small farming community. This unassuming suburb in Queensland’s Gold Coast has a rich history. It’s a story woven from Aboriginal origins and pioneering spirits.

The name Pimpama itself is a gift from the Bundjalung language. It means ‘place of soldier birds’. A fitting name for a place that witnessed so much struggle and growth. In the 1860s. Pimpama began to thrive. Farmers experimented with cotton and sugar. They relied on South Pacific Island laborers. This was short lived however.

Pimpama became home to Queensland’s first sawmill. It was built in 1863. The industrious Jesse Daniells was responsible. Later. arrowroot became the star crop. By 1908 Pimpama’s arrowroot production fed the entire country. Can you imagine the scale of that operation? The ingenuity required?

Irish settlers like William Doherty and his wife Eliza Fannon arrived. They contributed to the growing community. William played a significant role. He worked on local plantations. He signed a petition. This petition requested a school in Pimpama. The school opened in 1872. Education was always important here.

Cobb & Co coaches once traveled through here. Pimpama served as a stop. Passengers traveled between Brisbane and the growing Gold Coast. Two hotels flourished. They are gone now. Only memories remain. The route extended to Nerang in 1882. Pimpama’s role as a transport hub was essential.

Laurel Hill Farmhouse. It is a beautiful heritage site. Built in 1883-84. The impressive farmhouse belonged to William Doherty. It’s a reminder of the prosperity arrowroot brought. The house stood as a model of Queensland homes. The Dohertys were influential. They participated in church and civic life.

A railway station opened in 1889. It closed in 1964. It connected Pimpama to a wider network. This spurred growth and progress. The station is planned for reopening though. As part of the Cross River Rail project. Modern Pimpama looks forward to its past.

Today. Pimpama is a bustling suburb. It’s experienced incredible growth. The modern residential developments stand in contrast to the agricultural past. It’s a testament to the resilience of the community. But the spirit of the pioneers still echoes in the streets of Pimpama. A place of soldier birds. Indeed.
