Nestled amidst the sprawling Carmen Nelson Bostick Cemetery in Tomball, Texas, lies the poignant Pillot Cemetery Plaque. This plaque marks not just a cemetery, but a poignant chapter in the history of early Texan settlers. The Pillot Cemetery Plaque tells the story of Claude Nicholas Pillot, a Frenchman who, with his wife Jeanne, sought a new beginning in Texas. Arriving in 1837, after a brief stay in the United States, they settled along Willow Creek, becoming pioneers of the area. The Pillot family’s homestead became a hub for other French settlers. Their home hosted church services and school classes, fostering a sense of community in the burgeoning settlement. Tragedy struck in 1844 with the death of their 21-year-old son, August. This devastating loss led to the creation of the Pillot family burial ground, which eventually expanded to include friends, neighbors, and ultimately evolved into the Pillot Cemetery. The Pillot family plot, with its striking monument shipped from France, remains the heart of this historical graveyard. Although Claude Pillot passed away in New Orleans on a business trip, Jeanne lived out her days in their Texas home. She was laid to rest beside her son in the family plot upon her death in 1866. For decades, the Pillot Cemetery was largely neglected. However, in 1959, a dedicated effort to restore the cemetery began. This revival ensured the preservation of the Pillot Cemetery, with the last recorded burial taking place in 1997. Pillot Cemetery Plaque commemorates approximately seventy souls. Among them lie three Civil War veterans. The Pillot Cemetery Plaque stands as a testament to the Pillot family’s legacy and offers a window into the lives and struggles of early Texan settlers.
