It began in the Piney Point community with a small plot of land purchased by pioneers like Rev Max Austin and Sister Hannah Rasmus from Mrs Willie Canfield. Their vision was simple to create a space for worship and fellowship.
Pilgrim Rest wasn’t always here at its present location. Due to growth and the need for more space the church moved more than once. Think about the effort it must have taken to relocate an entire congregation. The original site served as a memorial plot after the move to Westheimer and Jeanetta. Later Rev Jones oversaw another move to 3401 Jeanetta Road. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of this congregation.
The church’s history is rich with impactful leaders. Rev Max Austin served as the first pastor. Rev J Blackstock followed leading for about three decades. Rev Gab Alford served for a shorter period. Then Rev Max Austin returned. Rev C G Wilkins’ tenure was particularly transformative. Under his leadership the current church building was constructed. He ordained dozens of deacons appointed junior deacons and installed many trustees. He also welcomed many new associate ministers. His son Rev Daymond A Wilkins followed in his footsteps becoming interim pastor in 2021 and officially taking the helm in 2021. The legacy of these pastors lives on in the vibrant community that is Pilgrim Rest today.
