$250.00 That’s how much the land cost in 1927. The land that Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church now stands on. Can you believe it? This unassuming building holds a century of faith and history.

Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to resilience. A story woven through decades of dedication. Founded in 1897 under the leadership of Rev Aaron Brown. The church has seen many pastors come and go. Each leaving their mark.

The early years were marked by growth and change. In 1927 a significant milestone was reached. The purchase of the current land for a mere $250.00. A testament to the community’s collective effort. The Oshman brothers received $175.00 in cash upfront. The balance was paid gradually. Deacons Will Kirk Charlie Mayberry and Phil Jones played crucial roles. So did Trustees Deacon Phil Jones Bro Robert Brooks and Bro Took Ross.

The church continued to flourish under successive pastors. Rev O D Davis Rev Robinson and Rev Wilson guided the congregation through various challenges and triumphs. Rev O D Davis even returned for another two years in 1945. A testament to his commitment.

Then came Rev W L Weathers in 1947. He oversaw significant renovations. A new kitchen and restrooms were added. The cornerstone was even laid by the Widowson Lodge No 368. Deacon Johnnie Mathis was the Wishful Master.

Rev Ned Walker’s 42-year tenure from 1961 to 2003 was a period of remarkable transformation. Further remodeling expanded the facilities. A pastor’s study a choir room and central air conditioning were added. The men’s restroom was moved inside. A sidewalk now surrounds the church. Donations included the offering and communion tables. Rev Adan Perez later upgraded the restrooms.

A groundbreaking ceremony in 2001 marked the start of a new chapter. The construction of a new church building was completed on July 12 2003. A grand opening ceremony celebrated this achievement.

Rev Robert Simpson Jr succeeded Rev Walker in 2003. His leadership has been instrumental in the continued growth of Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church. Membership surged. New ministries were established. Deacon Nelson Amy became the business manager. The second phase of construction was completed. This included demolishing the old church and adding parking a marquee a steeple and a cross.

Pastor Simpson has ordained numerous deacons. He also elevated four associate ministers to pastors. These ministers now serve other churches. Rev Earnest Sharp Rev Larry Blackmon Rev Bruce Washington and Rev Kelvin Love. They all started their journey here at Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church.

Today Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church stands as a vibrant community hub. A beacon of faith. A place where history and hope intertwine. It’s a journey of faith. A story of perseverance. And a testament to the enduring power of community.
