“Ever heard of a church that started as a prayer league?” That’s the story of the Pilgrim Holiness Church. We’re standing in front of a place with roots stretching back to the late 19th century. It embodies a fascinating chapter in religious history.

The Pilgrim Holiness Church didn’t begin as a traditional church. It emerged from the Holiness movement. It was initially known as the International Holiness Union and Prayer League. This group formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1897. Evangelists Seth C. Rees and Martin W. Knapp led it. They emphasized holiness, healing, evangelism, and premillennialism.

Over time, this prayer league evolved. It gradually transformed into a denomination. The Pilgrim Holiness Church officially took shape in 1922 through various mergers. This new denomination strongly emphasized Wesleyan principles. These principles included the sanctification of believers. They also focused on evangelistic missionary work.

Martin Wells Knapp, a Methodist minister in Cincinnati, Ohio, played a vital role. He organized the International Apostolic Holiness Union. His aim was to revive the original spirit of John Wesley. He wanted to restore apostolic practices, methods, power, and success.

In October 1922, a significant event occurred. The General Assembly received The Pilgrim Church of California. The denomination then adopted the name The Pilgrim Holiness Church.

The Pilgrim Church had been organized on May 27, 1917. It was first known as the Pentecost Pilgrim Church in Pasadena, California. By 1922, the church had established a school. It was known as Pilgrim Bible School. They published a periodical in Pasadena, California. They had even sent missionaries to Mexico.

The church’s growth wasn’t solely through mergers. Revival work and evangelism played a huge role. A key moment occurred in 1930. The General Assembly unified the denomination’s administration. They established one general superintendent. They created one general board. They set up a general headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In 1968, the Pilgrim Holiness Church merged with the Wesleyan Methodist Church. This merger formed the Wesleyan Church. However, not everyone agreed with this decision. Two groups, the Pilgrim Holiness Church, Inc. and the Pilgrim Holiness Church of NY, Inc., chose to remain separate.

The Pilgrim Holiness Church’s original purpose remained. It promoted worldwide holiness evangelism. Missionary work extended to numerous countries. These included South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, and parts of the Caribbean. It also reached Guyana, Suriname, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, the Philippines, and England.

Today, the legacy of the Pilgrim Holiness Church lives on. Its story reminds us of the evolving nature of religious movements. It shows how a simple prayer league can transform into a global force.
