Chiang Mai has many dazzling Buddhist temples. There are about 300 temples in Chiang Mai. You’ll find temples around almost every corner in the Old City.

Remember a few things before you visit a temple. It’s respectful to wear modest clothing. Some temples enforce a dress code of no shoulders or knees showing for both women and men. Wear slip-off shoes so you can easily step inside. Shoes are not allowed inside Buddhist temples. Don’t worry. No one is going to steal your sandals.

Once inside remember never point your feet at any imagery of Buddha. Keep this rule in mind when you sit down too. Tuck your legs to one side or sit on your calves. It’s inappropriate to have your back turned to Buddha.

Wat is the Thai word for temple complex. Within a wat are several buildings. Usually you’ll find an ubosot which is the prayer hall. Ubosots are rectangular buildings with east-facing entrances. They have alters with imagery of a sitting Buddha. Monks are ordained in ubosots. They hold daily mantra chanting there. A viharn looks awfully similar to an ubosot. But it is actually an assembly hall. Viharns are where most Buddhist ceremonies take place. A chedi is also known as a stupa or pagoda. It’s the most sacred structure in the wat. It’s usually built over buried relics. Chedis are bell-shaped. You can find them behind the ubosot in many Chiang Mai wats.
