Whispers of ancient secrets echo from the Piesberg. This isn’t just a hill. The Piesberg is a chronicle etched in stone. For over 800 years, the Piesberg has played a vital role in Osnabrück. Imagine a place where the earth’s history is laid bare. It is a place where industrial culture thrives. This is the Piesberg Culture and Landscape Park.

The Piesberg began as a geological wonder. It evolved into a mining hub. It now stands as a testament to the interplay between nature and industry. The Piesberg is located in the heart of the TERRA.vita UNESCO Nature and Geopark. It reveals 300 million years of Earth’s history.

As you gaze upon the Piesberg, visualize the earth’s crust. The rock quarrying and tectonic forces reveal the planet’s past. The oldest rocks in the entire Geopark TERRA.vita are found right here at the Piesberg. The Johannissteine stand as sentinels. They are 300-million-year-old sandstones.

Think back to the Upper Carboniferous period. The Piesberg was a hotbed for unique flora and fauna. The Piesberg quarry is internationally recognized for its plant and arthropod fossils. Paleontologists and researchers flock here to study them. Over 55 species of fossil plants and more than 25 species of insects have been identified here. Some were even first discovered and named after the Piesberg. “Piesbergtupus hielscheri” and “Erasipterella piesbegensis” carry the Piesberg’s name.

Picture the vast braided river system that once flowed here. Its currents ran to the north and west. Imagine lush floodplain deposits with larger plant accumulations. These formed the coal seams that miners later sought.

Mining on the Piesberg dates back to the Stone Age. From the 15th century, miners extracted “blind coal”. The first mine shafts were built in 1568 to access the Johannesstein seam. By 1830, shafts reached deeper seams like Mittel, Zweibänke, and Dreibänke. In 1859, large-scale quarrying of sandstone began. The Piesberg became one of the largest quarry complexes in Central Europe.

Today, an 8 km circular trail encircles the active quarry. The trail leads to the summit of the Piesberg. From here, a panoramic view unfolds. See the Teutoburg Forest and Wiehengebirge in the distance. The Hasestollen connects the lower and upper sections of the park.

The Museum of Industrial Culture is located on the site of a former hard coal mine. A mine tunnel extends 280 meters into the mountain. It leads to an adit opening.

As nature reclaims disused facilities, new life emerges. Cormorants and eagle owls now inhabit the area. Bats find refuge in the quiet, dark mine tunnels.

At a height of 200 metres, observe the layers in the 100-meter-high rock faces. They reveal millions of years of natural processes. These layers tell a story of geological transformation. The Piesberg continues to evolve. It will soon protect large areas of the quarry as a geological site.

The Piesberg is more than just a mountain. It is a living museum. It showcases the intertwined history of nature and industry. The Piesberg invites you to explore, discover, and reflect on the forces that have shaped our world.
