From humble beginnings as a source of Sichuan’s finest tobacco, the Pidu District Government building now stands as a symbol of the district’s transformation. The Pidu District Government, formerly Pi County, became a district in 2016. This decision, approved by the State Council, marked a shift in Pidu’s identity, from an agricultural center to a player in Chengdu’s expanding urban landscape. Pidu District, encompassing Pitong Subdistrict and several other towns, sprawls across 437.5 square kilometers. The 2020 census recorded a population of 1,672,025 people, a testament to the area’s growth. But the story of Pidu District Government stretches back much further. During the Warring States period, this area was part of the ancient Shu Kingdom. In 314 BC, the Qin State conquered the region. Two years later, in 312 BC, Pi County was established. This marked the beginning of Pidu’s long history as an administrative center. The district’s rich past is also intertwined with the history of doubanjiang, the spicy fermented bean sauce. Pidu is renowned for producing some of the finest doubanjiang in the region. Imagine the bustling markets, filled with the aroma of fermenting beans, a testament to the culinary heritage of Pidu. Today, the Pidu District Government oversees a vibrant and evolving district. It manages nine subdistricts and three towns. It is a hub of activity, shaping the future of Pidu. As you stand before the five-story Pidu District Government building, remember the layers of history beneath your feet, from ancient kingdoms to the modern district.
