Once a greenhouse, now a gallery of masterpieces. That’s the story of the Picture Gallery in Potsdam’s Sanssouci Park. This isn’t just another pretty building. It’s one of the oldest museum buildings in Germany, built specifically for a ruler’s art collection.

King Frederick the Great, a passionate art collector, commissioned this gallery. He wanted a special place to showcase his ever-growing collection. Before this, he adorned his rooms in Sanssouci with contemporary French art. But later, he became more interested in history paintings.

Imagine Frederick strolling through his former greenhouse. Tropical fruit trees once stood here. Then, in 1755, Johann Gottfried Büring transformed it. Büring created this long yellow building for the king’s art.

Look at the building’s exterior. It’s rather simple. But don’t let that fool you. The interior is lavish. Marble sculptures stand between the windows on the garden side. These sculptures represent arts and sciences. The keystones above feature portraits of artists.

Step inside the Picture Gallery. Notice the floor. It’s laid with white and yellow Italian marble in a rhombic pattern. The walls are a rich green. Framed paintings hang close together. This dense display is typical of the Baroque style.

Gaze up at the curved ceiling. It’s adorned with gilded ornaments. The entire hall exudes a festive atmosphere. Frederick wanted to impress. He wanted to showcase the wealth of the House of Hohenzollern.

The Picture Gallery houses an invaluable art collection. You’ll find masterpieces by Caravaggio, Peter Paul Rubens, and Anthony van Dyck. One of the most famous works is Caravaggio’s “Doubting Thomas.” This painting didn’t enter the collection until the 19th century.

Originally, ancient sculptures stood on the window side. Most of them are now in other collections. Adjacent to the main hall is a smaller cabinet. Here, paintings of smaller formats are displayed.

Interestingly, about fifty paintings were moved to the Altes Museum in Berlin in 1829. These included works by Rembrandt, Rubens, and Watteau. The marble statues were also moved at this time. In 1929, the Picture Gallery was set up again. About 120 works returned from Berlin.

During World War II, the paintings were moved to Rheinsberg Palace for safekeeping. Sadly, many were lost. However, in 1958, the Soviet Union returned a large collection of confiscated paintings. Some pictures remain in Russian collections to this day.

The Picture Gallery is more than just a building. It represents Frederick the Great’s passion for art. It showcases the artistic taste and wealth of the Hohenzollern dynasty. As the oldest museum building, the Picture Gallery in Park Sanssouci holds a special place in Germany’s cultural history.
