“Can such a small fort really protect a whole city?” I hear some of you ask. Well, let me tell you, Phupha Suthat Fort may not look like much from where we’re standing, but it has a story to tell. A story of kings and conquests, of change and resilience. Phupha Suthat Fort is one of the original fourteen forts built by King Rama I to protect the newly established capital of Rattanakosin. Now, imagine yourself back in the late 18th century. Bangkok was a fledgling city, newly christened as the capital and still under threat from invaders, particularly the Burmese. The city needed protection, and King Rama I, a shrewd strategist, ordered the construction of a formidable wall encircling the city, punctuated by these fourteen strategically placed forts. They were the guardians of the city, their cannons poised to defend it from any potential threat. Each fort was given a unique name, and Phupha Suthat Fort, though smaller than some of its counterparts, played a crucial role in the city’s defense system. The forts never saw actual battle, a testament to their effectiveness in deterring threats. The Burmese threat eventually subsided, paving the way for a period of peace and prosperity within the fortified walls of Rattanakosin. But as the city grew, the need for a modern infrastructure became paramount. By the 19th century, most of the forts and walls, including almost all of Phupha Suthat Fort, were sadly, demolished to make way for roads and buildings. Though Phupha Suthat Fort might not be standing here in its entirety today, its story serves as a poignant reminder of Bangkok’s fascinating past.
