Established in 1997 Phuong Trung My Tay is a fascinating place. It’s located in District 12 Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam. This ward’s history stretches back much further than its official establishment date. Its name originates from the French colonial era. It was then the name of a large village in Binh Thanh Hai. This area was part of Go Vap district in Gia Dinh province. Trung My Tay was formed by combining three villages from the Nguyen dynasty. These were My Hoa Trung Chan and Trung Chan Tay.
In 1955 the South Vietnamese government incorporated Binh Thanh Hai into Hoc Mon district. The villages became known as hamlets. Trung My Tay was just one hamlet within Hoc Mon. After 1975 Trung My Tay hamlet remained part of Hoc Mon district in Ho Chi Minh City.
A significant change occurred on August 27 1988. A decision reorganized the administrative boundaries of Hoc Mon. Part of Dong Hung Thuan hamlet was combined with Trung My Tay. This created Tan Chan Hiep hamlet. Another part of Dong Hung Thuan namely Dong Tien hamlet also joined Trung My Tay.
The final transformation came on January 6 1997. A government decree established District 12. This included parts of five hamlets. These were An Phu Dong Dong Hung Thuan Tan Thai Hiep Tan Thai Nhat and Thanh Loc. Crucially it also included portions of Tan Chan Hiep and Trung My Tay hamlets. Phuong Trung My Tay was formally established on April 1 1997. It covered 273 hectares and had 11332 people. The remaining land and population of the original Trung My Tay hamlet became part of Tan Xuan hamlet in Hoc Mon district.
