Tucked away in the heart of District 12, Ho Chi Minh City, lies Phường Tân Thới Hiệp. A place brimming with a history as rich as the Mekong Delta itself. Phường Tân Thới Hiệp wasn’t always a phường. Its story begins long ago, during French colonial times, as the village of Tân Thới Hiệp. It was part of Bình Thạnh Hạ tổng, in Gò Vấp quận, within the province of Gia Định. The name Tân Thới Hiệp itself arose from the merging of two older villages, Tân Hưng and Thới An. This union, a foreshadowing of the many transformations this area would undergo. Fast forward to 1955. The Republic of Vietnam government redrew the map, incorporating Bình Thạnh Hạ tổng into Hóc Môn quận. The village, now designated as xã, became part of this new district. After 1975, xã Tân Thới Hiệp remained within Hóc Môn district, under the administration of Ho Chi Minh City. But the most significant change occurred on January 6, 1997. A decree from the government established District 12, carving it out from parts of Hóc Môn and several existing xã. Phường Tân Thới Hiệp was born from this restructuring, initially comprising 330 hectares and a population of 10,343. Imagine the bustling activity, the redrawing of boundaries, the sense of a new beginning for this community. Even more recently, in March 2024, Phường Tân Thới Hiệp underwent further administrative reorganization. The former eight khu phố, along with smaller residential units, were consolidated into 23 new khu phố. This streamlining removed the administrative layer of residential groups. Phường Tân Thới Hiệp, bordered by Thới An, Tân Chánh Hiệp, Đông Hưng Thuận, and Gò Vấp quận to the south, stands as a testament to the ever-evolving urban landscape of Ho Chi Minh City. Its journey from a small village to a modern phường reflects the larger story of Vietnam itself, a blend of tradition and transformation, resilience and growth. Today, Phường Tân Thới Hiệp encompasses 2.62 square kilometers. It is home to over 56,000 people. As you walk its streets, remember the layers of history beneath your feet, the echoes of villages past, and the vibrant energy of a community constantly reinventing itself.
