Could a village’s name foretell its destiny? Phuong Phuc Loi, meaning “happiness” and “prosperity”, seems to have carried its people through a rich and evolving history. Right now, we stand in a modern ward of Hanoi. Yet, imagine this area before 2004, as the rural commune of Hoi Xa. Phuong Phuc Loi’s story is one of transformations. It was born in 2003 from the former Hoi Xa commune within Gia Lam district. It brought with it a history stretching back centuries, etched in the land and lives of its 7,820 residents. Life here once revolved around the fertile banks of the Red River. People farmed rice, corn, and vegetables, raised livestock, and some even crafted traditional fans in Nong Vu Dong village. The very layout of Phuong Phuc Loi whispers tales of growth. Originally a single village, perhaps part of the Thien Duc lineage, prosperity led to its division into three: Vo Thuong, Vo Trung, and Vo Dong. These hamlets, clustered together, later became the commune of Nong Vu. Another offshoot, Vu Dong village, emerged nearby, formed by families seeking new beginnings near Nong Vu Thuong. Over time, the names shifted again, echoing the changing times and political landscapes. Hoi Xa, the name it held before becoming Phuong Phuc Loi, came into being in 1916. In 1948, amid the revolution, seven villages, including Hoi Xa, Vu Dong, and others, combined to form Truong Chinh commune. Then, in 1955, it split again. Two villages became Giang Bien, and five, including Hoi Xa, became Phuong Phuc Loi commune under Bac Ninh province. But the changes didn’t stop there. In 1961, Phuong Phuc Loi, along with the entire Gia Lam district, became part of Hanoi. The spirit of unity, vital during wartime, led to Phuong Phuc Loi being renamed Hoi Xa once more in 1965. This was a nod to its historical roots, a reminder of shared heritage amidst national struggle. Finally, in 2004, Phuong Phuc Loi claimed its current identity. It transitioned from commune to ward within Hanoi’s Long Bien district, embracing modern development while holding onto its rich, interwoven past. Phuong Phuc Loi’s story isn’t just about name changes. It’s about adaptation, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of happiness and prosperity, woven into the very fabric of this place.
