Phường Long Chánh

Could a place’s name foretell its destiny? Phường Long Chánh, meaning “Long Righteousness Ward,” seems to carry its history within its title. Here in Gò Công city, in Tiền Giang province, Phường Long Chánh stands as a testament to its layered past. Phường Long Chánh wasn’t always a ward. It began as Tân Long village, established towards the end of the Gia Long era. Imagine Phường Long Chánh under the reign of Minh Mạng, elevated to the status of Hòa Đồng tổng, part of Tân Hòa district. Then, in 1841, it shifted again, becoming part of Hòa Đồng Hạ tổng. Fast forward through the years, and Phường Long Chánh saw itself under French rule, then as part of Gò Công province before 1945. Its identity continued to evolve. On February 16, 1987, Phường Long Chánh officially became Lang Chánh village. But this was not its final form. A significant change came on June 23, 1994, when Ward 4 was established, incorporating part of Long Chánh village. This marked a move towards Phường Long Chánh as we know it today. The four ấp of Long Bình, Long Hưng, Long Mỹ, and Long Phước formed the structure of Phường Long Chánh. Finally, on March 19, 2024, Phường Long Chánh officially became a ward within Gò Công town. This marked its transition into a modern administrative unit, with a defined area of 7.87 square kilometers and a population of 8,596 as of 2022. Phường Long Chánh’s transformation reflects the broader administrative shifts in the region. It showcases how villages became wards and towns became cities. Phường Long Chánh, from its humble origins as a village, now holds a unique place within the fabric of Gò Công city.
