Phường Khương Mai

Nestled in the heart of Hanoi, Phường Khương Mai has a story to tell. It’s a tale of transformation, from a quiet area near Bach Mai Airport and surrounding ponds to a vibrant part of the Thanh Xuân district. Phường Khương Mai wasn’t always the bustling ward you see today. Originally part of Khương Thượng ward in the Đống Đa district, it held a much different character. The land was primarily associated with the airport and the serene landscape around the ponds, a stark contrast to the urban environment now present. The transformation began as Hanoi modernized. The area around the airport was designated for military and government offices, along with residential housing. This shift brought an influx of people, changing the quiet landscape into a hub of activity. On November 22, 1996, a significant change occurred. A portion of Khương Thượng, both in terms of land and population, was separated to create a new entity. This newly formed entity became Phường Khương Mai, now under the jurisdiction of the newly established Thanh Xuân district. The 1996 establishment of Phường Khương Mai marked a turning point. It went from a subsection of a larger ward to an independent entity. This transition reflects the growth and development of Hanoi, as areas were reorganized to accommodate the expanding urban landscape. Phường Khương Mai now covers an area of 105.80 hectares. As of 2022, its population reached 21,543 people. This density speaks to the ward’s appeal, attracting a mix of military families, government officials, and other residents.
