Its very name, meaning “East Gate Ward,” speaks of its ancient origins as one of the three gates into the Thăng Long citadel during the Trần dynasty. Built in 1274, this gate stood as a guardian on the eastern flank of the city. Imagine, in the 13th century, the flow of people and goods through this vital portal. Phường Cửa Đông has seen its share of transformations. From the flourishing urban development of Hanoi to the period of French colonial rule, this ward has adapted and endured. Although divided into smaller wards at one point, it was reunited in 1975, regaining its historical identity. Today, Phường Cửa Đông stands as a vital part of Hoàn Kiếm District, home to important cultural and economic landmarks. Within its borders lies the Kim Cốc Pagoda, a place dedicated to Princess Ỷ Lan, a revered figure in Vietnamese history. Sadly, over time, the pagoda’s once-expansive grounds have shrunk due to historical events and urban encroachment. Not far from here, you’ll find the Hứa Thận Shrine. Originally built in 1838 as a simple thatched structure, it was renovated in 1841 with more durable materials and further expanded in 1848. While much of the exterior is obscured, the interior remains largely intact. It offers a glimpse into the architectural and spiritual practices of the past. Phường Cửa Đông is more than just its historical landmarks. It is a living, breathing neighborhood, a blend of old and new.
