Nestled on the southwestern edge of Long Bien district, Phường Bồ Đề has a unique story to tell. Phường Bồ Đề wasn’t always a bustling urban ward. Established in 2003, it merged the former Bồ Đề village with part of Gia Lam district. This area holds a special place in Hanoi’s history, marked by its proximity to the Red River and the iconic Chuong Duong Bridge. The name “Bồ Đề,” meaning “Bodhi,” whispers tales of enlightenment and ancient Bodhi trees. These trees, though lost to time, once graced this area, giving their name not only to Phường Bồ Đề, but also to the nearby wharf and river section. Imagine Hanoi in the past, when two magnificent Bodhi trees stood tall, marking the location of the royal Bodhi Palace, as recorded in the “Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư.” The very air of Phường Bồ Đề seems to vibrate with this historical significance. Within Phường Bồ Đề sits the Bồ Đề Pagoda, a place of peace and reflection. While the original pagoda’s exact age remains a mystery, its current structure reflects the Nguyen Dynasty style. The pagoda’s history might stretch back to the Ly or Tran dynasties, periods when Buddhism flourished. A stele within the pagoda, the “Trường caias Thiên Sơn tự bi ký,” dates back to 1614, indicating a much older structure beneath the Nguyen Dynasty facade. The Bồ Đề Pagoda we see today was reconstructed in 1874 by Master Thich Nguyen Bieu, also known as Nhat Thiet. He revitalized the pagoda, establishing a monastic school and leaving an enduring legacy. He is now recognized as the first patriarch of Bồ Đề Pagoda, a testament to his dedication and influence. Today, Phường Bồ Đề, with its rich blend of history and modern development, continues to evolve, carrying the whispers of ancient Bodhi trees and enlightened minds.
