“Lost spirits roam these woods,” whispered old man Hem, his eyes darting nervously towards the dense foliage of Phum Prey L’ngo. “The loggers awakened them.” Phum Prey L’ngo, nestled near Cambodia’s vast Prey Lang forest, is more than just a hamlet. Since 2007, they have risked their lives, patrolling the forests on motorbikes, documenting illegal activities with a specially designed mobile phone app. They faced death threats, arrests, and constant surveillance. Even confiscated equipment mysteriously returned to the loggers. The fight for Phum Prey L’ngo, for Prey Lang, is a fight for survival. The Kuy people, the PLCN, and international partners are using every tool at their disposal, from satellite imagery to forest observatories, to expose the destruction. The fight has earned the PLCN international recognition as the 2020 Landscape Hero by the Global Landscapes Forum. Despite the challenges, hope remains alive in Phum Prey L’ngo.
