Deep in the heart of Phnom Penh, nestled within the Daun Penh district, lies Phum Anhchanh, a small district steeped in history. Phum Anhchanh may be small, but its significance in the larger narrative of Phnom Penh is undeniable. Phum Anhchanh sits at the very heart of Chaktomuk, the “Four Faces,” where the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and Bassac rivers converge. Phum Anhchanh witnessed the transformation of Phnom Penh from a riverside village into the bustling capital we know today. Phum Anhchanh was part of the city that, in the 1920s, earned the moniker “Pearl of Asia.” This was due to the elegant French colonial architecture that sprung up, transforming the city’s landscape. Sadly, Phum Anhchanh also experienced the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime. Like the rest of Phnom Penh, its residents were forcibly evacuated in 1975, leaving the city deserted. This dark period in Phum Anhchanh’s, and Phnom Penh’s history, left an indelible mark. But, like the resilient koki tree of Lady Penh’s legend, Phum Anhchanh, and Phnom Penh, rebounded. After the Khmer Rouge were overthrown in 1979, people slowly began to return to Phum Anhchanh, rebuilding their lives and their city. Today, Phum Anhchanh is a vibrant part of Phnom Penh, reflecting the city’s dynamic mix of ancient traditions and modern aspirations. As you walk through its streets, imagine the layers of history beneath your feet, the echoes of lives lived, and the enduring spirit of this small corner of Phnom Penh.
