Did you know Phuket Zoo once thrived? Right here before us stood a place teeming with life. Opened in 1997 it was a private zoo near Mueang Phuket and Phuket Bay. For years it housed over 1000 animals across countless species. Visitors could experience close encounters with tigers monkeys and elephants. There were dedicated areas for crocodiles elephants and monkeys. An aquarium and an orchard garden added to the variety.

But Phuket Zoo’s story wasn’t without controversy. Allegations of poor animal welfare and cruelty surfaced. PETA even labeled it “hell on Earth for animals”. Reports of animals disappearing added to the negative publicity. The macaques in the monkey shows were forced to perform tricks. One young elephant tragically died from injuries sustained during a performance. The crocodiles lived in overcrowded dirty conditions. A turtle’s tiny enclosure sparked outrage. Even some birds were chained. Concerns also arose over possible drugging of animals to prevent attacks during encounters. Many exhibits lacked proper enrichment. One Asiatic black bear lived in a mere concrete pit.

The zoo temporarily closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This closure became permanent. The lack of tourism proved unsustainable. Milo the orangutan a zoo resident faced much criticism. A petition gathered over 10,000 signatures for her removal due to health issues and forced photo opportunities. Authorities confiscated her but she was later found in a small jungle cage. Sadly Milo died the following year possibly due to the health problems suffered at the zoo.

The closure however didn’t solve all problems. A British explorer recently discovered several animals remained at the abandoned Phuket Zoo. He found crocodiles tigers and deer. This shocking discovery reignited calls for accountability. The Phuket Zoo’s history is a reminder of the importance of responsible animal care and conservation. While the zoo itself is gone its legacy prompts reflection on ethical treatment of animals.
