Established in 1975 Phramongkutklao College of Medicine stands proudly. It’s a testament to Thailand’s dedication to medical excellence. This isn’t just any medical school. Phramongkutklao College of Medicine is the first and only military medical school in the entire country. Think about that for a moment. The unique blend of military discipline and medical training creates a truly distinctive institution.
The story of Phramongkutklao College of Medicine begins much earlier though. In 1939 the Army Medic School opened its doors. This was the precursor to the college we see today. Unfortunately a lack of resources forced its closure in 1947. The idea of reviving the school lingered. It resurfaced several times before finally gaining momentum in 1973. King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s speech reignited the passion for a new medical school. His words inspired the Royal Thai Army to approve the establishment of a Medical Cadet College. That college became Phramongkutklao College of Medicine the following year. King Bhumibol named it in honor of his uncle King Vajiravudh known by the regal name Phramongkutklao.
Today Phramongkutklao College of Medicine is an affiliated college of Mahidol University. It boasts a rigorous six-year program. First-year students study at Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Science. They then continue their preclinical studies at the college itself. The final three years involve hands-on clinical training at the renowned Phramongkutklao Hospital. Military training is also a crucial component. It’s provided by the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy. Graduates can serve as military doctors or civilian doctors. They have the option to work for various branches of the Thai armed forces or for the Ministry of Public Health.
The college has numerous departments covering both pre-clinical and clinical years. Pre-clinical years include Anatomy Biochemistry Microbiology and more. Clinical years offer specializations in Pediatrics Ophthalmology Psychiatry and many other critical fields. This comprehensive education prepares graduates for diverse medical careers.
Phramongkutklao College of Medicine is more than just an institution of higher learning. It’s a symbol of Thailand’s commitment to military preparedness. It’s a leader in medical education. It stands as a tribute to the legacy of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and his uncle King Vajiravudh. As you stand before its walls remember the rich history and the dedication to excellence that define Phramongkutklao College of Medicine.
