“Nine stories of light,” a student murmured, gazing up at the Boston University Photonics Center. The Photonics Center isn’t just a building. It’s a beacon of innovation, a testament to the power of light. Opened in June 1997, this 235,000-square-foot structure stands as a hub for groundbreaking research. The Photonics Center cost $78.4 million to construct. It houses world-class facilities and shared laboratories. Over 170 faculty, staff, and students work within its walls. Their research spans diverse fields. Biomedical engineering, nanoscience, physics, astronomy, and chemistry are just a few examples. The Photonics Center isn’t just about high-tech labs. The first two floors are dedicated to classrooms and additional lab spaces. These are primarily used by the College of Engineering. Many engineering faculty also have offices and research labs in the building. The building’s location presents a unique challenge. Situated next to the Mass Pike and a busy commuter rail line, the Photonics Center is bombarded with noise and vibrations. Imagine trying to conduct sensitive experiments with the constant rumble of trains and traffic. The architects cleverly addressed this issue. The building rests on a reinforced concrete mat. This minimizes vibrations. The windows also feature a one-inch airspace between panes to block out the noise. This allows for a quiet and focused research environment inside. The Photonics Center stands as a testament to human ingenuity. Not only in its groundbreaking research but also in its clever design. It is a place where light illuminates the path to discovery.
