In 1583, a whisper of an exclusive academy for noble young ladies first echoed through Dortmund. This academy, known as the Phoenix-Gymnasium, has undergone many transformations over the centuries. Today, we stand before a modern institution. Yet, its walls still echo with the stories of its rich past. The Phoenix-Gymnasium first took flight as a convent school, nurturing the minds of young aristocratic women. By 1853, it had evolved into a Rektoratsschule, a type of higher secondary school, recognized by the Arnsberg regional administration. The school initially served as a higher girls’ school. In 1911, it transformed into a co-educational elementary school, welcoming both boys and girls to its three-tiered preparatory program. The burgeoning student population, reaching 210 pupils in 1911 and later swelling to 383, necessitated a new building by the Emscher River, completed in 1912, a structure which still stands today as a testament to the school’s growth. In 1937, the school adopted the name Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Schule, after the German writer. World War II left its mark. In the summer of 1944, a bomb struck the Phoenix-Gymnasium, gutting the auditorium. Yet, like the mythical phoenix, the school rose from the ashes. It reopened shortly after the war, merging the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Schule and Goethe-Oberschule under one roof at Seekante 43. Despite the challenging conditions—lack of heating and a leaky roof in the winter—formal education resumed. The school continued to adapt. In 1967, it finally became the independent Phoenix-Gymnasium we know today, shedding its previous name, Humboldt-Gymnasium II. Beyond the academic pursuits, the Phoenix-Gymnasium embraced technology, offering free Wi-Fi to students and teachers from 2012 to 2015, a testament to its commitment to modern education. A new triple gymnasium opened in 2014, sparing students the bus trip to the Helmut-Körnig-Halle for sports lessons. Further renovations in 2014 included a revamped schoolyard, a new bicycle parking area, and a waste disposal station. The Phoenix-Gymnasium stands as more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to the enduring power of education, constantly evolving and adapting, a true phoenix rising again and again.
