The roads are quiet. After another 12 km you will see Phnom Baset. A golden pagoda sits atop this hill. It has been a tourist attraction since before the Khmer Rouge period. Despite poor maintenance, it is still beautiful.
A narrow road leads up the hill. A stunning path cuts through a thick jungle. Tropical trees and colorful flowers line the way. This hillside jungle could be called a botanical park. Many local trees have name signs on their trunks.
Locals visit Phnom Baset to escape stress. It is a peaceful picnic site for families. It does not cost anything to visit. At the peak, enjoy views of plains, lakes, rivers, and rice fields. The air is fresh and cool all year. It is similar to Bokor Hill in Kampot Province.
Local families run food stations here. They offer country dishes like grilled fish with green mango salad. Relax in a hammock while waiting for your food. Enjoy the breathtaking view.
Explore the jungle after your meal. Trek to see rare trees and flowers. Jump from boulder to boulder for thrills. Discover the temple for an Indiana Jones adventure.
Prasat Phnom Baset sits on the north slope of the hill. It is a rectangular brick building. It measures 12 m west-east by 8.45 m north-south. It houses a rounded granite rock with a natural grotto. The temple faces west. Scholars believe it was built around the 8th century.
Near the temple stands Preah Aung Thom. This is an enormous lying Buddha carved from granite rock. It is enhanced with cement and recent paint. Local stories link this place to a Jataka legend. It is also tied to Preah Bat Baksey Cham Krong. He was a legendary Khmer king protected by sacred spirits.
Another temple is Srey Krob Leak. It translates to Proper Lady temple. Inside is a structure resembling a cave entrance. The temple’s history is unknown. Ta Som is the temple guard. He says a princess meditated here for enlightenment. The structure was once a tunnel entrance. It supposedly linked the temple to Oudong Mountain but there is no proof.
Ta Som believes the Nakta or divine spirit of Phnom Baset is powerful. It once granted wishes to those who prayed. Now, fewer people believe. Many mysteries remain on this hill.
Watch the sunset from the hilltop. Let your stress fade away. This is a must-see experience at Phnom Baset.
