“Left the Philippines to start a new life.” That’s how the story of the Philippine International Baptist Church in Detroit began. This church is more than just a building. It represents faith, resilience, and a community’s journey.

In 1990 a pastor and his family left their home. They sold their possessions in the Philippines. Their destination was Dearborn Michigan. The pastor was called to lead what was then First Filipino Baptist Church. Later the name changed to Philippine International Baptist Church.

Imagine arriving in a new country with five young children. Picture facing immediate financial challenges. The church had late mortgage notices. A check had bounced. Unpaid phone bills piled up. The church could not pay the pastor for three months.

The Baptist State Convention of Michigan offered help. They provided a small monthly supplement. The family bought used clothing. They obtained food from Newburg Baptist Church for just ten cents a pound. The pastor and his wife found jobs. They worked hard to support their family.

After three years the church’s situation improved. They paid off the mortgage. The pastor received a salary increase. The church provided health insurance and a retirement plan. They even gave the family a new Dodge Caravan. The family went on their first vacation in years.

Over time the Philippine International Baptist Church thrived. In partnership with the Baptist State Convention of Michigan they started five other churches. The founding pastor eventually retired. His children grew up and had families of their own. He now has eleven grandchildren.

The story of the Philippine International Baptist Church is inspiring. It demonstrates faith and community. It shows how faith can overcome obstacles. The church remains a beacon of hope in Detroit.
