In 1873, a prominent figure built a remarkable house right here in Detroit. This is the Philetus W. Norris House. Philetus Norris, a true visionary, founded the town of Norris, which later became part of Detroit. He even convinced the Detroit and Bay City Railroad to run through the area, boosting the town’s growth. The Philetus Norris House stands as a testament to his legacy. Originally, the house boasted gingerbread trim, brick chimneys, and a lush yard. Norris himself ran his real estate business from a wing attached to the house. Later, the house was a boarding house and then a three-family unit before reverting to a single-family home. The asphalt siding you see now likely covers the original exterior. Philetus Norris House holds a significant place in Detroit’s history. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Sadly, a devastating fire in 2016 caused substantial damage to the Philetus Norris House. Despite this tragedy, its historical significance remains. Philetus Norris, the man behind the house, led a fascinating life. He served as the second superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. He was instrumental in developing the park’s infrastructure, overseeing the construction of roads and trails. A mountain in Yellowstone National Park is even named after him, Mount Norris. The Philetus Norris House reflects the spirit of a man who shaped both Detroit and Yellowstone.
