“A city within a city.” That’s how some describe the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard Historic District. Right here, at the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers, stands a testament to American naval might and ingenuity. The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, the nation’s first, has witnessed centuries of maritime history. Established in 1776 on Front Street, the shipyard’s humble beginnings contrast sharply with its later expansion onto League Island in 1871.
