Seven months of intense work. That’s what it took to bring the Philadelphia Marathon Mural to life. This vibrant mural, located at mile marker 19, captures the very essence of the Philadelphia Marathon. It celebrates the grit and perseverance of marathon runners. The mural was designed by Kala Hagopian Williams of Hagopian Arts. She was chosen from seven competing artists in 2018. The Philadelphia Marathon Mural was officially dedicated on November 21, 2019. It’s installed on Quaker City Motor Sport, a fitting backdrop for this celebration of athletic achievement. Kala incorporated archival photos from past marathons, weaving a visual tapestry of the race’s history. The mural also depicts the marathon route itself, highlighting iconic Philadelphia landmarks that runners pass. As runners approach mile markers 19, 20, and again at 21, the Philadelphia Marathon Mural serves as a vibrant reminder of their journey. They can see themselves reflected in the art, their own grit and perseverance mirrored in the faces of past runners. The mural isn’t just a celebration of the Philadelphia Marathon, it’s a celebration of Philadelphia itself.
