Established in 1966 the Phaya Thai District Office stands before you. It wasn’t always here. Its story is woven into the fabric of Bangkok’s growth. Originally parts of Dusit and Bang Kapi Districts were combined to create Phaya Thai. The name itself is a nod to the Phaya Thai Palace built by King Rama V.
The Phaya Thai District Office is more than just a building. It’s a silent witness. It’s seen significant boundary changes. Huai Khwang District was carved out in 1973. Further adjustments followed in 1978 to balance populations. A significant shift occurred in 1989. The creation of Ratchathewi District saw parts of Phaya Thai reassigned. Then in 1993 more land was transferred to Din Daeng. These changes shaped the office’s jurisdiction. Today it oversees what remains of the original Phaya Thai.
Interestingly the Phaya Thai Road and Phaya Thai BTS station are not within the district’s boundaries. They lie in neighboring Ratchathewi. This is due to the many boundary changes over the years. It’s a detail easily missed but fascinating nonetheless. The Phaya Thai District Office’s location reflects the dynamic history of Bangkok’s urban planning.
The area around the Phaya Thai District Office has evolved. Under King Rama VI it was filled with military cantonments. The name Sanam Pao is another name for this area. This refers to the original name of Phaholyothin Road. That main road still runs through the area. The Phaya Thai District Office serves as a link to Bangkok’s military past and its modern administration.
Today the district is home to government offices. These include the Government Savings Bank the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The Royal Thai Army also occupies a large part of the eastern side. The Army Stadium and Channel 5 are located there. Wat Phai Tan is the sole Buddhist temple in the district.
