“A fortress of earth and stone, a silent sentinel guarding the city’s heart.” Pháo đài Đồn Hòa. Have you heard its name whispered on the winds of Saigon? Pháo đài Đồn Hòa. This citadel, born in 1790, has witnessed the ebb and flow of power, the clash of empires, and the rise of a nation. We stand today on ground soaked in history, ground that once echoed with the commands of Nguyễn Ánh, the future Emperor Gia Long. Imagine Saigon, then known as Gia Định, a city caught in the crossfire between the Tây Sơn dynasty and Nguyễn Ánh’s ambition. He dreamed of a unified Vietnam, but first, he needed a stronghold, a place to gather his forces. With the aid of French military advisors, he built Pháo đài Đồn Hòa, a Vauban-style citadel, a fortress designed to withstand any siege. The citadel, a square structure with four imposing corner towers and six outer half-towers, rose from the earth. Its walls, built of earth and stone, stretched for an impressive perimeter. A sophisticated glacis, esplanade, and dry ditch added layers of defense. Inside its protective embrace, Nguyễn Ánh established his headquarters and palace, the nerve center of his campaign. The very existence of Pháo đài Đồn Hòa became a symbol of Nguyễn Ánh’s growing power, deterring further attacks from the Tây Sơn and securing the southern region. This allowed him to focus on vital domestic reforms. He implemented agrarian programs, transforming idle land into productive fields, and the resulting surplus of grain fueled his growing army and navy. By 1800, his forces had swelled to over 30,000 soldiers and 1,200 vessels, all thanks to the stability brought by the citadel. In 1802, his dream was realized. He conquered all of Vietnam and ascended the throne as Emperor Gia Long. Pháo đài Đồn Hòa’s story, however, doesn’t end there. It played a critical role in the Lê Văn Khôi revolt of 1833. The rebels, led by Lê Văn Khôi, seized the citadel and held it for two years, defying the imperial forces of Emperor Minh Mạng. Even after its recapture and subsequent demolition in 1835, Pháo đài Đồn Hòa rose again, rebuilt in 1836, though smaller and more vulnerable. Its fate was sealed in 1859 when French warships sailed up the Saigon River and bombarded the citadel. After a fierce battle, the French captured the fortress and, unable to hold it against Vietnamese counterattacks, razed it to the ground. Though the physical structure of Pháo đài Đồn Hòa may be gone, its legacy endures. It stands as a testament to a turbulent era, a symbol of Vietnamese resilience, and a reminder of the city’s rich, complex past.
