“A gatekeeper’s life,” mused old Wilhelm, stroking his beard, “is not all roses and sunshine.” We stand before the Pförtnerhaus, one of the gatehouses of Park Babelsberg. It’s a sturdy structure, hinting at a history more complex than a simple entrance. The Pförtnerhaus, built between 1842 and 1843, served as both a checkpoint and a home for the gatekeepers. Imagine the stories these walls could tell. Designed by Ludwig Persius, this Pförtnerhaus displays a Norman castle-like facade, a surprising Tudor touch in the heart of Potsdam. It stood as the main entrance to the park, a sentinel guarding the avenue to Glienicke. Before the ravages of World War II, the Pförtnerhaus buzzed with activity. It housed the park’s gatekeepers and attendants, a small community within the larger estate. Think of them: bustling about their duties, perhaps sharing a laugh or a worry, their lives intertwined with the rhythm of the park. While this Pförtnerhaus survived the war, another, the Mill Gate, met a different fate. Built in 1866 and also designed by a Persius, this time Reinhold, the Mill Gate was heavily damaged. Sadly, it was demolished after 1945. Only its foundations and gate pillars remain, ghostly reminders of a lost guardian. The Pförtnerhaus stands as a testament to the changing times, a silent observer of history’s ebb and flow.
