Gazing upon Pförtchenbrücke, have you ever wondered about its curious name? It whispers tales of a time when Erfurt wore a different face, a city girdled by formidable fortifications. Pförtchenbrücke, a bridge born in 1897, gracefully arches over the Gera’s flood channel. Its construction, part of the larger flood management project, served a vital purpose. It connected the Untere Dichterviertel, a burgeoning neighborhood, to the heart of Erfurt. The name “Pförtchenbrücke,” or “Little Gate Bridge,” speaks to a smaller passage nearby. Close to the bridge stood the “Stumpfer Turm,” or “Blunt Tower,” a defensive structure within Erfurt’s old fortifications. This tower had a small gateway, a “Pförtchen,” leading to a footbridge over the moat. This little gateway allowed pedestrians to access the Dreibrunnenfeld and Steigerwald directly. Pförtchenbrücke itself is a marvel of engineering and artistry. Spanning 24.5 meters and boasting a width of 12.72 meters, it showcases a beautiful basket-handle arch. The arch, constructed with 118,000 bricks, including 25,000 yellow clinker bricks, rests upon sturdy concrete abutments. The bridge’s aesthetic charm is further enhanced by light Seeberger sandstone, adorning the wing walls, end faces, and arch crown. Four obelisks, each bearing two cast-iron candelabra, stand sentinel. The coats of arms on the end faces are a quiet nod to Erfurt’s Prussian past. Pförtchenbrücke even briefly served the city’s tramway from 1899 to 1904. Until 2006, it carried the weight of the Bundesstraßen 4 and 7. The bridge has been lovingly maintained throughout the years. Its obelisks underwent restoration in 1988. A more extensive renovation followed between 1997 and 1998. This included crack injection and pinning in the arch and abutments, as well as meticulous stone restoration of the end faces, wing walls, and parapets. Pförtchenbrücke stands today as a testament to Erfurt’s rich history and architectural prowess. A beautiful landmark and a whispered echo of a fortified past.
