This area, once called Verrisse, supposedly evolved into the name Pfersee, the location of our magnificent Pferseer Schlössle. Now, scholars dispute this tale, suggesting the name’s true roots lie in a pre-Germanic word. The mystery surrounding the name adds to the allure of Pferseer Schlössle. Pferseer Schlössle itself stands as a testament to time, its history woven into the very fabric of Augsburg. Documents show a predecessor building existing as early as the 12th century. One intriguing source even claims the medieval castle replaced a Roman fort. Imagine the knights of Pfersee, their armor glinting in the sun as they defended their stronghold. The most notorious of these knights was Hermann von Pfersee, a fearsome figure known for his daring raids around 1300. He ultimately met his downfall in 1309 when the local villages united to capture him. Pferseer Schlössle has seen many transformations over the centuries. Around 1600, Martin Zobel, the owner of both the castle and the village, rebuilt it into the structure we admire today. After Pfersee became part of Bavaria, the castle served as a tax office. Later, it became a hospital, offering refuge to the sick and poor. After a period of neglect, the dilapidated building was thankfully purchased by a development company in the 1980s and lovingly restored.
