“A church built on a medieval highway? How peculiar.” Pfarrkirche St. Marien in Dortmund is indeed peculiar. This Lutheran church has a captivating history, deeply intertwined with the city’s past. Pfarrkirche St. Marien stands on the Hellweg, a significant medieval trade route. It was constructed between 1170 and 1200, initially serving Dortmund’s council and court. Imagine the hustle and bustle of the Hellweg, with merchants and travelers passing by this grand Romanesque structure. Pfarrkirche St. Marien has witnessed Dortmund’s transformation from a medieval hub to a modern city. Around 1350, a stunning Gothic choir was added to Pfarrkirche St. Marien, showcasing the evolving architectural trends. This addition influenced the design of the Reinoldikirche, built directly across the Hellweg. Inside Pfarrkirche St. Marien, precious medieval art treasures await. The Berswordtaltar, dating back to 1385, depicts the poignant Swoon of the Virgin. The Marienaltar, crafted by Conrad von Soest around 1420, showcases vivid scenes from Mary’s life. A tragic tale unfolds with the Marienaltar. In 1720, during renovations, workmen drastically cut the panels to fit a new frame. Imagine the loss of a significant portion of von Soest’s masterpiece. Fortunately, both the Marienaltar and Berswordtaltar survived World War II. They had been safely stored in Cappenberg Castle. While Pfarrkirche St. Marien was nearly destroyed during the war, it was faithfully rebuilt by 1959. The church’s “swallow’s nest” organ, perched high above the nave, was reconstructed in its original location. The subdued-colored glass windows, designed by Johannes Schreiter, add a touch of modern artistry to this historic gem. Today, Pfarrkirche St. Marien continues to serve as a place of worship and a venue for sacred music concerts. It echoes with centuries of stories, reminding us of the power of art, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Dortmund.
