Gazing at the Pfarrkirche Puch bei Hallein, can you sense the echoes of centuries past? This unassuming church, dedicated to the Nativity of Mary, holds within its walls a rich tapestry of history. The Pfarrkirche Puch bei Hallein first appeared in records in 1347. Imagine the world as it was then. Much of the church we see today dates to the late Gothic period. The exterior is simple, with a striking pointed tower standing proudly on the south side. This tower houses the south portal and features pointed arch sound windows, topped by baroque rounded window openings. The tower’s spire extends down over its beveled edges, a unique architectural detail. Stepping inside, you enter the tower hall with its late Gothic stellar rib vaulting. A late Gothic pointed arch south portal leads you from the tower hall into the main nave. The nave and choir retain their late Gothic charm. Notice the intricate net rib vaulting, a masterpiece of craftsmanship, with a six-part diamond star and rounded keystones. A wooden gallery, dating back to 1672, graces the west end of the four-bayed nave. From a south-facing balcony on this gallery, a late Gothic pointed arch portal allows access to the upper level of the tower. On the south side of the fourth bay, you’ll find a late Gothic rounded, chamfered portal leading to the sacristy. The church also features a Baroque north aisle, added in 1735. Look for the inscription above the rounded arched portal marking the year of its construction. The Pfarrkirche Puch bei Hallein wasn’t always a parish church. It served the community for centuries before officially becoming a parish church in 1930. The church underwent restoration work in 1966-1967, ensuring its preservation for generations to come. Inside, you’ll find a crucifix created by Wolf Weissenkirchner in 1659. The Pfarrkirche Puch bei Hallein stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the artistry of generations past.
