Could this unassuming church have survived a devastating fire? The Pfarrkirche Obertrum, standing gracefully before you, certainly has a tale to tell. This Roman Catholic church, dedicated to Saint James the Greater, has been the spiritual heart of Obertrum am See for centuries. The first mention of a parish here dates back to 1143, showing its deep roots in the community. However, the Pfarrkirche Obertrum as we see it today is a blend of different architectural styles, shaped by both time and tragedy. In 1499, the late Gothic west tower was constructed, a testament to the craftsmanship of Wolfgang Wiesinger from Braunau am Inn. Over the centuries, Baroque side aisles were added, enhancing its grandeur. Then, in 1917, disaster struck – a fire ripped through the church, leaving its mark on its structure. Yet, from the ashes, the Pfarrkirche Obertrum rose again. Between 1917 and 1920, it underwent extensive renovations. Architect Karl Pirich, influenced by the Art Nouveau movement, oversaw its reconstruction. The church we see today, with its striking flat wooden coffered ceiling, is a testament to his vision. In 1925, it was re-consecrated, marking a new chapter in its long history. The Pfarrkirche Obertrum is a symbol of resilience, a place where faith and history intertwine.
