Is this where it all began? The Petruskirche stands before us, a silent witness to centuries of Heidelberg’s history. This church, the oldest in Heidelberg’s Altstadt, has seen it all. The Petruskirche predates the city itself, with its earliest structure dating back to the 12th century. It was originally a gift from the Bishopric of Worms, its name a tribute to Worms Cathedral, also dedicated to St. Peter. In its early days, the Petruskirche stood outside Heidelberg’s city walls, the sole guardian of the eastern half of today’s Altstadt. It served as Heidelberg’s parish church until the 14th century when the larger Church of the Holy Spirit was built. A fascinating chapter in the Petruskirche’s history began in 1400. It, along with St. Laurentius in Altdorf and St. James in Lauda-Königshofen, became a property of the University of Heidelberg. Removed from the control of local bishops, these churches were placed directly under papal authority. This unique arrangement lasted until the Reformation, marking the Petruskirche’s transition to a Protestant place of worship. The Petruskirche we see today is a testament to Heidelberg’s resilience. Destroyed in the city’s devastation of 1689 and 1693, it was rebuilt with a Baroque interior. A significant renovation in the 19th century, funded partly by the sale of church land for the Odenwald railway, gave it its current neo-Gothic splendor.
