“Wow What a magnificent structure” This is the Petrikirche in Dortmund. One of Dortmund’s four medieval town churches. It stands proudly in the western part of the city center.

Built in 1322 as a Gothic hall church the Petrikirche has witnessed centuries of history. Its walls have seen earthquakes storms and even lightning strikes. Damage to the tower and nave were sadly common. In 1759 a total destruction occurred. The church was rebuilt with classical Baroque elements and galleries.

But that wasn’t the end of its trials. During World War II a devastating air raid on May 23 1943 reduced the Petrikirche to its foundation walls. Miraculously the altar survived its evacuation. It is now known as “The Golden Miracle” or “The Golden Wonder”. This amazing Antwerp retable from 1521 is a sight to behold. Standing 5.65 meters high and 7.40 meters wide with its wings open it’s the largest surviving Antwerp altar.

The altar’s beauty is amplified by its changing displays throughout the year. During Holy Week it remains closed. Eighteen panel paintings are displayed on the front. From Pentecost to Thanksgiving the outer wings open to reveal 36 paintings depicting Jesus’s family and childhood. Fully opened from Thanksgiving to Holy Week and Easter to Pentecost the gilded carving altar showcases 36 compartments and 633 figures. The detailed Passion story of Jesus including one of the earliest depictions of a child on a hobbyhorse is on full display.

The altar’s journey is as fascinating as the church itself. Originally commissioned by the Dortmund Franciscans it was later acquired by St Peter’s parish before the monastery’s demolition in 1809. It was even moved to a temporary church after World War II until the Petrikirche’s reconstruction was complete between 1954 and 1966.

Today the Petrikirche stands as a testament to resilience and faith. Its soaring tower reaching approximately 105 meters high is a landmark. Its interior is a treasure trove of history and beauty. The Petrikirche’s story is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a reflection of Dortmund’s enduring spirit. The Petrikirche continues to serve as a place of worship and community. It’s a place where people connect and experience the presence of God regardless of background or language. It’s truly a remarkable place.
