“A castle fit for a university?” you might ask yourselves. Here at Petit Valrose, that’s exactly what you’ll find. This isn’t your typical university campus. Petit Valrose is nestled within the Chateau de Valrose estate, a sprawling property that whispers tales of extravagance and royalty. Imagine yourself transported back to the late 19th century. Baron Paul von Derwies, a prominent figure in Tsar Alexander II’s court, had a vision. He dreamt of a castle that would rival the most opulent residences on the French Riviera. And so, between 1867 and 1870, this neo-Gothic masterpiece rose from the ground, a testament to the Baron’s wealth and ambition. The Chateau de Valrose, with its opulent interiors, frescoed ceilings, and sparkling chandeliers, quickly became the epicenter of Nice’s social scene. World-renowned musicians like Joseph Joachim and Francis Planté filled its halls with music, while the elite of society flocked to its grand balls and soirees. Sadly, the Baron’s lavish lifestyle led to his downfall. Financial troubles forced him to bid farewell to his beloved castle. It passed through various hands, each owner adding their own chapter to its storied past. However, fate had a grand plan for Chateau de Valrose. In 1950, it was acquired by the City of Nice, and its destiny took an unexpected turn. Instead of becoming a museum or a private residence, it was entrusted to the world of academia. Since 1965, it has served as the home of the Université Nice Sophia-Antipolis, with Petit Valrose standing as a testament to this unique blend of history and education. As you stroll through the corridors of Petit Valrose, remember that you’re not just walking through a university building, but through the remnants of a bygone era. Every stone whispers stories of elegant soirees, the echoes of grand music still lingering in the air.
