Curiosity sparked within the halls of the Petit Science Center. It’s not just a building, but a crucible of discovery. The Petit Science Center opened its doors in March 2010. This 350,000-square-foot structure, standing tall at 10 stories, is more than just steel and glass. It’s a testament to scientific advancement, health innovation, and education. The Petit Science Center houses a diverse range of programs. These include biology, chemistry, nursing, nutrition, physical and respiratory therapies, and public health. It also serves as the home of the Neuroscience Institute, a hub for cutting-edge research. The center’s namesake, Parker H. “Pete” Petit, a Georgia State alumnus, made a leadership gift that enabled its creation. Petit believed in the power of education. He envisioned the center as a catalyst for students’ career goals. Combined with the exceptional faculty, the Petit Science Center fosters growth and innovation in the sciences. Inside, you’ll find advanced biotechnology core facilities. These include a mass spectrometer, cell sorters, a gene chip reader, confocal, electron, and atomic force microscopes. These tools empower researchers to delve into the intricate world of cellular processes. The Petit Science Center also houses a unique feature: a Bio-Safety Level 4 (BSL-4) lab. This is one of the few university-based BSL-4 labs in the country. Here, scientists conduct research on deadly viruses, pushing the boundaries of our understanding of infectious diseases. Over 2,000 students pass through this building daily, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of learning and discovery. The Petit Science Center isn’t just a building. It’s a beacon of progress, a testament to the power of scientific inquiry.
