Over two thousand years old the Perumal Koil stands tall. Its history is etched in every stone.

Perumal Koil a magnificent temple in Kanchipuram is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. He is worshipped here as Lord Varadaraja Perumal. The temple’s rich history dates back to the Chola dynasty. They ruled the region from the 9th to the 13th centuries AD. Over the centuries the temple has undergone many renovations. The most recent one was completed in 2008.

What makes Perumal Koil unique is its main deity. Lord Varadaraja Perumal is depicted in a reclining posture. This is unusual for Hindu temples. The massive stone idol is over 20 feet long. It is one of the largest reclining idols in the world. The temple also houses shrines for other gods and goddesses. These include Lord Narasimha Lord Ranganatha and Lord Hanuman.

The architecture is breathtaking. The temple complex spreads over several acres. It is surrounded by a high wall. The main entrance is a towering gopura. Intricate carvings and sculptures adorn it. They depict scenes from Hindu mythology. Within the complex are numerous mandapas or halls. Each one is beautifully designed. A highlight is the thousand-pillar hall. Its intricate carvings and sculptures are a testament to the skill of the artisans. This gallery was built in the 16th century. It seamlessly blends Dravidian and Vijayanagara architectural styles.

Every year in the Tamil month of Vaikasi May-June a grand festival takes place. Brahmotsavam is a ten-day celebration attracting thousands of devotees. They come from all over India to witness the grandeur.

Perumal Koil is more than a temple. It is a living testament to faith culture and history. It’s a place where the past present and future intertwine. It’s a place you will never forget.
