Returning to South America in 1896, Uhle excavated Pachacamac. He also explored Mochica and Chimu sites. His Pachacamac report remains a key text for South American archaeology. He identified Tiwanaku imagery in coastal artifacts. Uhle collected about 9000 artifacts spanning 3000 years.

Later, Uhle worked in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Chile. In 1917, he scientifically described the Chinchorro mummies. Uhle also contributed to North American archaeology. He excavated the Emeryville shell-mound in California.

The Colegio Peruano Aleman Max Uhle began its activities in 1956. By 1961, it had 269 students. In 1967, the school moved to its current campus. The West German government funded the construction. In 2002, preschool classes started. Today, the school has over 1100 students.
