Pershing High School

Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Detroit’s history stands Pershing High School. A beacon of education and community, Pershing High School has witnessed triumphs and challenges, shaping generations of young minds since its inception in 1930. Pershing High School was designed to accommodate over 2,200 students, a testament to the city’s commitment to education. Named after General John J. Pershing, the esteemed World War I hero, the school adopted the general’s troop nickname, “Doughboys,” as its mascot. This connection to a historical figure instilled a sense of pride and resilience in the student body. Pershing High School’s journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. The school faced academic challenges, leading to its inclusion in the Education Achievement Authority (EAA) in 2011. This state-led initiative aimed to revitalize struggling schools. However, the EAA’s tenure was short-lived due to funding and governance issues. Pershing High School returned to the Detroit Public Schools Community District in 2017. Even amidst these difficulties, Pershing High School remained a cornerstone of the community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the school transformed into a technology hub, offering meal distribution, mobile screenings, and childcare resources. Pershing High School also faced legal battles. In 2014, a teacher’s attempt to break up a fight led to a lawsuit that highlighted the challenges faced by educators in under-resourced environments. Today, Pershing High School continues to serve a predominantly Black student body, with a focus on providing a well-rounded education. The curriculum includes core subjects like English, math, science, and social studies, alongside electives such as music theory, robotics, and JROTC. Pershing High School also boasts a rich athletic tradition, offering sports like basketball, football, and baseball. Pershing High School’s alumni have achieved remarkable success in various fields. From NBA stars like Spencer Haywood and Steve Smith to actors like Tim Meadows and musicians like J Dilla, Pershing graduates have left an indelible mark on the world. A $77 million investment promises a state-of-the-art facility for Pershing High School, set to open in 2027. This new building symbolizes a renewed commitment to education and the bright future of the Doughboys.
